A woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman`s garment; for whosoever doeth these things is an abomination unto Jehovah thy God. (ASV)

This is not very helpful, because it does not give any way of telling which sort of clothing is for which sex.

It is sometimes held to mean that women ought not to wear pants, but the men in the Bible apparently did not wear pants, as can be inferred from Exodus 20:26 (if you climb up upon an altar, you'll expose yourself to it) and elsewhere. In fact, one can interpret it as meaning that tight pants is OK for both sexes, because it has to be fitted differently for the sexes' different hip shapes.

It doesn't really matter whether it tells which clothing is which. It says men's clothing should not be worn by women, and women's clothing should not be worn by men. Perhaps it was expected that everyone already knew which was which. Or maybe it depends on what sex the clothing was originally intended to be worn by. Either way, the passage itself is not errant.
