then this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God`s house. And of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee. (ASV)

Pro

Edit this section if you suspect error.

Stones being "set up for a pillar" are phallic worship. It is notable that subsequently Jacob is described as pouring milk over the stone as a ritual, which is exactly what occurs in hindu phallic worship (known as worshipping Shiva's Lingam).

Such phallic worship is directly condemned in Leviticus and Deuteronomy, explicitely attacking stones set up as a pillar, and ordering them to be pulled down. Also, Leviticus and Deuteronomy explicitely condemn such practices at Bethel.

This is a clear example of the Bible contradicting itself.

Con

A couple of facts that should be noted:

1. The other passage that referrs to this pillar (Genesis 35:14) does not indicate milk, but specifically says "A drink offering," which in Hebrew practice was wine, not milk.
2. While it is certainly similar to Lingam practices from Hinduism, definitively calling it "phallic worship" is a rather baseless assertion.

Or, to misquote Sigmund Freud--sometimes a pillar is just a pillar.
