Previous Verse < Genesis 37 > Next Verse

And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh`s, the captain of the guard. (ASV)

Pro

Appears to contradict Genesis 37:28, which states the Ismaelites took Joseph into Egypt, also Genesis 39:1 which says the Ishmaelites sold Joseph to Potiphar. Relationship between Ismaelite & Midianite caravans in general appears to be garbled.

Con

"In older writings the term, Arab, is used only as an appellative, meaning "desert," or "people of the desert," or "nomad" in general. The name for Arabia in the earliest Old Testament writings is either Ismael, or Madian (A.V., Ishmael, or Midian) as in the twenty-fifth chapter of Genesis, which is a significant indication of the relative antiquity of that remarkable chapter." [1]

To illustrate this we read the verse cited in PRO:

Genesis 37

28 Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.

The common sense reading of this verse would lead the reader to conclude that the Midianites were Ishmaelites.
