Previous Verse < Mark 16 > Next Verse

And very early on the first day of the week, they come to the tomb when the sun was risen. (ASV)

Pro

The Gospels give us conflicting accounts about the timing of the visit to the tomb. This verse by itself is problematic, since lian prōi (translated "very early") implies a pre-dawn time, between 3:00 and 6:00 am. But this is contradicted by the second half of the sentence, which places it after sunrise (anateilantos tou heliou). This is inconsistent with the "early dawn" given by Luke 24:1 and Mary coming "while it was still dark" in John 20:1.

See C.S. Mann, Mark: A New Translation with Introduction and Commentary (Anchor Bible 27), 1986, pp. 664-556.
