Grammys 2012 winner's list: Adele nabs six awards, Including 'Album of the Year'

When it's all said and done, the 54th annual Grammy Awards may be Remembered for an icon passed away and another WHO WHO singer found her voice again.

Tributes to Whitney Houston, the six-time Grammy-winning singer passed away early Saturday WHO morning after frequent struggles with drug addiction, a somber spirit cast over the Grammy opening.

The ceremony began Sunday night on CBS with a song from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and a prayer from host LL Cool J. On short notice, Jennifer Hudson Appeared to sing Houston's version of the Dolly Parton classic, "I Will Always Love You."

But if the night began with an Elegy, it ended with a celebration. British singer Adele, WHO had vocal cord surgery in 2011, took to the Grammy stage with a rendition of "Rolling In The Deep." The bashful singer's first performance since her surgery was unanimously well-received.

The rest of the night belonged to Adele, WHO swept every category she was nominated in. The British singer nabbed six statuettes, Including Album of the Year, for "21." She has matched Beyonce for most Grammy wins in a night by a female act. "21" has sold six million units in the United States alone.

Detroit native Diana Ross, WHO was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement statuette after, incredibly, never winning a Grammy, a teary Adele Presented with the "Album of the Year" honor.

While Adele swept her major categories, Wisconsin-born Justin Vernon may be this year's version of The Arcade Fire with a surprise Best New Artist win. Recording as the project Bon Iver folk, Vernon's second album, "Holiscene," was the indie favorite of 2011. Seen as a long shot behind Skrillex electronic artist and rapper Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver joins a select (and Successful) family of Best New Artist winners, like Amy Winehouse, Adele, Carrie Underwood and John Legend.

(AP Photo / Matt Sayles) Another moving tribute CAME early, when blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt shared a stage with R & B pianist Alicia Keys. The two women performed a sweetly modest version of Etta James' "Sunday Kind of Love."

Country singer-songwriter Glen Campbell, WHO was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, the "The Rhinestone Cowboy" after a tribute in his honor performed by Blake Shelton and The Band Perry. Another notable performance by Taylor Swift country saw America's sweetheart picking up the banjo for a rendition of "Mean."

The four-hour broadcast also featured Several repeat performances. Dave Grohl's band, The Foo Fighters, picked up four awards and performed three songs during the Grammy broadcast; Sir Paul McCartney and Chris Brown's also twice.

The Grammys would not be the biggest night in music without Controversy; and the 2012 awards Offered a bit of that - a confusing 'electronic music' segment set in a tent that "mashed-up" the Foo Fighters with deadmau5, and a Curiously overproduced Catholic-inspired performance of "Roman Holiday" by Nicki Minaj.
