There are about a dozen references to cannibalism in the O.T. 1 Lev.26:14 "I also will do this unto you... You shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it."

5 2 Kg.6:28-29 "This woman said unto me, Give thy son, that we may eat him to day, and we will eat my son to morrow. So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him."

6 Is.9:19-20 "Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother. And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm."

7 Is.49:26 "And I will feed them that oppress thee with their own flesh; and they shall be drunken with their own blood, as with sweet wine."

11 Mic.3:2-3 "Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; Who also eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron."

12 Zech.11:9 "I will not feed you: that that dieth, let it die; and that that is to be cut off, let it be cut off; and let the rest eat every one the flesh of another."

Skeptic's Annotated Bible

Are we to assume this traditional practice is wholly condemned or should we seek out recipes in the text?

Some of these are figures of speech, others are prophecies of war and deprivation. However, if you're interested in creating a new page to discuss these issues, go for it. --JustinEiler 09:44, 31 Oct 2005 (CST)

Being a boolean dunce, I have been unable to figure out how to start a discussion. Can you point me in the right direction?

Sorry about that--I've started a page (Cannibalism in the Bible), and copied your discussion there. Tomorrow I'll start the "Starting a new discussion" help page and move this to the talk page.

Re cannibalism: Do you know of any scriptural proscription of the practice?

Only sort of--in the dietary laws, human flesh is not included among the things that are considered as "clean" to eat, and of course, there is "Thou shalt not kill." But I don't know of a direct proscription against cannibalism.
